An Ikea Story

Two months ago, my company gave me a gift card to the retailer of my choice as a reward for being awesome. Or something like that. We were all set to buy our vanity from Ikea and besides, we were gearing up to spend a good $2000 on Ikea kitchen cabinets. There seemed to be plenty of places we could spend the money. So, I requested Ikea and two weeks later, had $200 of Ikea money in my hands.

And then, we change our minds about what we were doing for our vanity situation. No problem. We had cabinets to buy.

And then, I forgot about the gift card until we climbed into our good friend's truck with every single one of our cabinets loaded up in the back.

Now, I'm at a loss. I don't want a house that is filled with nothing but Ikea furniture and I don't want our space to look like I can't do anything other than Ikea decor. There are a few organizing type things I want to buy yet, such as the pretty wooden cutlery organizer and a whole whack of pull-out pantry organizers, but I don't think I can spend $200 on the inner workings of my cupboards.

What are your favourite Ikea items? What would you spend $200 on?

How many of you think I'm absolutely ridiculous to actually be complaining about having to go on a shopping spree at Ikea? (Oh. What. a hardship. *sarcasm*)

  1. Did I fail to post my comment?

Do you still need those curtains?

  2. What about a light fixture - they seem to have some pretty good ones! Don't feel rushed or pressured to buy anything though, that's when the regrets will set it. Definitely give yourself time, and maybe instead of one large purchase you'll find you make a bunch of smaller worthwhile purchases that your happy with :)

I bought one set (post on that might be coming soon... we'll see.) but I still need at least 3 more. And, hmm... curtains could probably eat up the gift card pretty fast...

Hi Kerry. I was thinking a bunch of small purchases would be the best way to use it up... that or see if they'll do some tweaking to put it towards the cabinets after the fact. I think I might be looking forward to a leisurely walk through the Ikea maze sometime in the next few months.

  5. Ooo, fun! I'd get this....

Which they used to have in a pretty blue but now they have this red. I think it would be great for a larger kitchen (like a pie cabinet), an entryway or a dining room. I guess even a bedroom! I just love that the doors are glass so you can display whatever linens, nicknacks or dishes you want to show off!

Practically, you could always get some curtains or rugs since most of Ikea's textiles are simple enough not to scream IKEA.

Whatever you do, I'm sure you'll find something. There are worst 'problems' to have!

  6. When we first moved into our first home we could have bought stock in Ikea furniture. We chose to go with the less modern (less Ikea looking) pieces for desks, bookshelves, entertainment centers, etc. Slowly we are weeding out but found that as long as you combine non Ikea furniture, decorations, fixtures, etc you don't look like you're coming straight out of the catalog. If I had two hundred of free spending money there I would buy fabric for curtains. You get a bang for your buck with what they offer.

  7. Did you get all the door and drawer dampers for your cabinets? Those add up quickly if you didn't get them the first time around. Pillows, kitchen accessories and all the random organization stuff adds up easily as well.

Ooh! I like it! I do wish it was in either the blue or the black though... there's something about the orangy kind of red that's not quite right... That's the kind of thing I'd have to wait to buy, until we're somewhat settled and can start bringing in new bits of furniture to fill the holes we may or may not discover.

Probably, I will end up with the curtains and we've always liked Ikea's rugs.

That's probably exactly what we'll do! I might even buy some of their fabric for things that AREn't curtains. (cotton summer dresses anyone?)

The dampers! Thank you! For some reason, we remember requesting them, but we definitely didn't get them. Fortunately, they also didn't show up on our receipt.

  11. I would go for textiles. I have a duvet from Ikea and love it. They also have nice rugs and curtian panels.
